A Pair of Reading Glasses That Changed a Life
Meeting Jana in Jail
Jana was a familiar face at the jail, often in and out due to frequent trespassing charges. Homeless and struggling, she would sometimes be found sitting in the middle of the road, which would lead to her arrest. Ironically, jail provided her with temporary shelter and meals. Over the years, it was clear she battled drug addiction and/or severe mental health challenges. She kept to herself, frequently talking to herself and shunning the company of others.
An Unexpected Opportunity
Each time Jana arrived, I would offer her a Bible and our song sheets, but she always declined. Some months ago, we began offering reading glasses to the women. When Jana returned, I gently asked if she might need a pair. This simple offer changed everything—she accepted the glasses, and with them, for the first time, she also accepted a Bible and the song sheets. That day, she joined in church with us.
A New Beginning
Today, Jana is no longer in jail—and she hasn’t returned. She is now a devoted member of my Tuesday morning Bible study. Her mental health has improved dramatically, and she lives with her father and daughter. Together, they attend a local church every week. Almost every Tuesday, Jana shares something wonderful God has done in her life.
